What triggers an audit

Four thresholds to know.

$575,000: audit

Michigan charities registered to solicit need audited statements once contributions, plus net event and gaming income, less government grants, reach $575,000.

$325,000: review

From $325,000 up to $575,000, Michigan requires financial statements reviewed or audited by a CPA.

$1,000,000: Single Audit

Spending $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year beginning on or after October 1, 2024 triggers a federal Single Audit.

Funders and lenders

Grant agreements, loan covenants and your own bylaws can require an audit at any size.

General information from the Michigan Attorney General’s renewal solicitation form (CTS-02) and the Federal Audit Clearinghouse, as of October 2026. It is not legal or tax advice.

  • Finance staff who want smoother fieldwork with fewer surprises
  • Board treasurers and finance committees overseeing the audit
  • Organizations growing past the Michigan review or audit thresholds
  • Nonprofits taking on federal grants for the first time
Who is behind the work

People who have sat on both sides of the audit.

A nonprofit leader who has answered to boards and funders, and a CPA who has performed audits and reviews.
